I don't really know much about this band. I've only heard this one song, but it's enough to get me pretty excited.

Apparently it's a 21 year old kid from New Jersey. Sounds like The Buzzcocks, but less musically practiced and fuzzier. Awesome.

Caetano Veloso - S/T (1969)

Caetano Veloso's most well known and reissued album seems to be his first self-titled album of 1968, with the Psychadelic cover and whatnot... but I think this one from 1969 is much better.

Caetano Veloso made his name as part of the incredible Tropicalia scene with the likes of Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze and Os Mutantes. He and Gilberto Gil were seen as the leaders of the very political music/arts movement and ended up being deported from Brazil for a few years because of their public stance on the Military government in Brazil at the time.

The scene created some absolutely incredible music which Caetano Veloso wrote much of. If you want to hear more of it, grab the Soul Jazz Records Tropicalia compilation (and their post-tropicalia compilation Brazil 70, which is just as good) as a good starting point.

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque

Bandwagonesque is the 2nd album by Teenage Fanclub. It's full of great guitar pop songs, with really sweet melodies and harmonies. Nothing too complicated, just simple, unpretentious songwriting.

If you like Sloan, Big Star, Pavement, you'll most probably like these guys.

Darcy Clay - Jesus I Was Evil

In the late 1990s in New Zealand there was a guy called Darcy Clay who had a reputation for making catchy garage tunes with a hillbilly twist out of his bedroom. He released an EP called Jesus I was Evil around the same time he landed a support slot for Blur on their 1997 tour. Unfortunately shortly after the tour he took his own life and (barring a live EP featuring much the same songs as his first EP) we never got to hear any more from Darcy.

Blake sent me links to a whole bunch of US garage stuff and as I was listening to some of it I was reminded of Darcy and how much I rate him. I was inspired to dig out the EP and share a couple of my favourites (linked below). The original EP is virtually impossible to find anymore but there was a rerelease of both EPs also titled Jesus I Was Evil on Antenna Records in 2002 which is still floating around. Enjoy!

Mount Eerie - Black Wooden Ceiling Opening

Phil Elverum makes some of my favourite noises. Unique guitar playing blanketed in layers of lo-fi fuzz, topped off with his warm voice make for something really great.

This is a bit different to past releases. It's 6 songs of Phil at his most passionate and noisy. Playing with the sounds of metal and hardcore more than usual, yet never actually sounding metal or hardcore. Just sounds like more Phil Elverum goodness. It's awesome.

Mark Sultan - Sultanic Verses

One of my favourite albums right now is Mark Sultan's Sultanic Verses. Mark Sultan is also known as the BBQ in King Khan & BBQ.

It has a nice mix of new garage/doo-wop-esque songs, and definitely worth a listen.
You will like this if you're also into: King Khan, Black Lips, Dirtbombs, or any 60s garage really

Sun Kil Moon - April

This album is special.

Not much more to say about it. If you like good music, you will like this album.

Will Oldham, Ben Gibbard and Eric Pollard all appear as guest vocalists, but you barely notice them. This is all about Mark Kozelek and his awesomeness.

For fans of basically any of the modern male country/folk/rock brigade. Jason Molina, Richard Buckner, Damien Jurado, Will Oldham etc.
